The top of page 5 on the first column is a one column heading: "JEWISH REFUGEES GET OFFER FROM SANTO DOMINGO" with subheads. (see images) Nice to have from the city of the ocean liner's namesake. Very rare as such.
Complete with 14 pages, light toning at the margins, some small binding holes and minor wear along the spine, generally nice.
AI notes: The MS St. Louis was a German ocean liner operated by the Hamburg-America Line, built in 1929–1930, and is most remembered for its tragic 1939 voyage carrying 937 Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi Germany. Departing from Hamburg in May 1939, the ship aimed to bring its passengers to Cuba, but most were denied entry when their visas were invalidated, and subsequent attempts to dock in the United States and Canada were also refused. Forced to return to Europe, the ship ultimately disembarked its passengers in several countries including the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands; tragically, when Germany later invaded continental Europe, many who had sought refuge fell into Nazi hands and perished in the Holocaust. The voyage became an enduring symbol of the international community’s failure to provide sanctuary to those fleeing persecution, later inspiring books, films, and historical studies under the moniker “Voyage of the Damned.”
