background: The April 3, 1926, bombing of Peking served as a harrowing demonstration of the shifting nature of Chinese warfare during the Warlord Era, as the Fengtian Clique—bolstered by Japanese-supplied aviation technology—utilized its superior air force to break the Guominjun's hold on the capital. Under the command of Zhang Zuolin, a fleet of roughly fourteen aircraft dropped bombs across the city, ostensibly targeting military installations but frequently striking civilian sectors, including the areas surrounding the foreign Legation Quarter. The psychological impact of the raid was profound, marked by tragic incidents such as the widely reported death of a bride in her wedding sedan, which came to symbolize the era's chaotic disregard for civilian life. This aerial pressure, combined with a ground blockade by Zhang and his temporary ally Wu Peifu, effectively crippled the "Christian Warlord" Feng Yuxiang’s administration, forcing his troops to retreat toward the Great Wall just two weeks later and allowing the Fengtian forces to seize control of the central government.
