AI notes: Baby Face Nelson, born Lester Joseph Gillis in 1908, was a notorious American gangster of the 1930s Public Enemy Era, infamous for his violent temper and fearless confrontations with law enforcement. Small in stature but ruthless in action, Nelson began his criminal career with petty thefts before escalating to bank robberies and forming alliances with other infamous criminals, including John Dillinger and the Barker-Karpis gang. Unlike the media-savvy Dillinger, Nelson was unpredictable and excessively violent, often using deadly force during robberies and shootouts. His criminal career culminated on November 27, 1934, during the Battle of Barrington in Illinois, where he engaged in a deadly gunfight with FBI agents, killing agents Samuel Cowley and Herman Hollis before being fatally wounded himself. Refusing to surrender, he reportedly fought until collapsing, dying later that night at just 26 years old, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most feared and reckless gangsters of the Depression-era underworld.
