background: The May 2, 1928 ceremony at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, marked the 25th anniversary of the Wright brothers’ first powered flight on December 17, 1903, and was a pivotal moment in recognizing their contribution to aviation. The event, attended by Orville Wright and other aviation pioneers, underscored the tremendous progress made in just a quarter-century, with aviation having already transitioned from the Wright brothers’ fragile Flyer to more advanced military and commercial aircraft. Orville Wright delivered a reflective speech, acknowledging both the monumental achievement of that first flight and the subsequent advancements in flight technology. This ceremony was crucial in generating public and governmental support for the establishment of a permanent memorial to honor the Wright brothers, an idea that had gained momentum in the years leading up to the event. While the memorial was not completed until 1932, the 1928 ceremony helped ensure that the Wright brothers’ legacy would be preserved for future generations, cementing their place in history as the fathers of modern aviation.
