background: On November 17, 1940, a bronze statue of Walt Whitman by sculptor Jo Davidson was dedicated at Bear Mountain State Park in New York, perched atop a natural boulder near the Trailside Museum along the Appalachian Trail. The monument commemorated the 30th anniversary of Mary Williamson Harriman’s 1910 land donation, which helped establish Bear Mountain–Harriman State Park, linking Whitman’s celebration of the American landscape to the preservation of public lands. Before its installation at the park, the statue had been exhibited at the 1939–40 New York World’s Fair, and its base includes a bronze plaque noting the dedication and the sculptor’s name. Nearby, verses from Whitman’s “Song of the Open Road” are carved into the stone, reinforcing themes of exploration, freedom, and connection to nature—values embodied both in Whitman’s poetry and in the scenic parklands of the Hudson Valley. The dedication thus symbolically united literature, public art, and environmental stewardship in a single commemorative gesture.
