Item # 724135

July 19, 1927

THE NEW YORK TIMES, July 19, 1927

* Aviator Richard E. Byrd
* Transatlantic airplane flight
* New York City welcome home

The top of the front page has a nice banner headline: "NEW YORK WELCOMES BYRD, HIS CREW AND CHAMBERLAIN; BRAVES RAIN TO CHEER TRANSATLANTIC FLIGHT HEROES; THEIR PROGRESS UP BROADWAY TO CITY HALL A TRIUMPH" with many subheads and photo. Much more inside with full page pictorial. Loads of text.
INCOMPLETE issue containing 12 of the 24 pages of the 1st section only but seems all Byrd related literature is present, light toning and minor wear at the margins, nice for display as such.

background: On July 18, 1927, Richard E. Byrd returned to New York City after his successful transatlantic flight aboard the airplane Columbia with pilot Bernt Balchen and crew, completing one of the earliest multi-person nonstop crossings from New York to France. The city greeted Byrd with a spectacular celebration: tens of thousands of cheering spectators lined Broadway and the avenues as a parade of floats, marching bands, and military units accompanied his motorcade. Byrd and his crew were hailed as pioneers of modern aviation, and civic leaders delivered speeches praising their courage, teamwork, and technical skill in conquering the Atlantic skies. Photographers captured the historic moment for newspapers nationwide, while the festive atmosphere reflected both national pride and the public’s fascination with the possibilities of long-distance flight, cementing Byrd’s status as one of America’s most celebrated aviators of the era.
