Background: On January 18, 1981, the United States formally approved the terms for the release of the 52 American hostages being held in Iran, ending the 444-day Iran Hostage Crisis that began on November 4, 1979. This followed months of intense diplomatic negotiations mediated through Algeria. The agreement included the unfreezing of Iranian assets held in U.S. banks, the release of Iranian assets for humanitarian purposes, and assurances that neither side would take further legal action regarding the crisis. The hostages were officially released on January 20, 1981, the day Ronald Reagan was inaugurated as President, after the U.S. Senate and President Jimmy Carter approved the Algiers Accords. This event marked a major turning point in U.S.-Iran relations and was widely covered in newspapers around the world.
