AI notes: The bombing of Cagliari on March 31, 1943, carried out mainly by U.S. Army Air Forces heavy bombers, was the most devastating air raid suffered by the Sardinian capital during World War II, aimed at crippling its strategic port, rail yards, airfields, and military installations, which were vital to Axis operations in the western Mediterranean; however, the scale and intensity of the attack caused widespread destruction well beyond military targets, obliterating large sections of the historic city center and residential neighborhoods, killing and wounding thousands of civilians and overwhelming civil defense and emergency services, leading to fires, collapsed buildings, and severe infrastructure breakdown, and accelerating the mass flight of the population from the city, which soon became nearly abandoned; this raid, together with subsequent bombings in the spring of 1943, effectively neutralized Cagliari as a functioning military and administrative hub and left a lasting imprint on Sardinian collective memory as a stark example of the human cost of strategic aerial warfare.
