Japanese-American newspaper from Hawaii reports war against Japan...
Item # 723430
December 08, 1941
THE NIPPU JIJI, "Leading Japanese Daily Newspaper In Hawaii", Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii, U.S.A. December 8, 1941
Read about a recent discovery below.
Interesting to have this banner headline: "U.S. CONGRESS DECLARES WAR AGAINST JAPAN AS FDR ACCUSES HER OF TREACHERY" in a newspaper for the Japanese citizens of Hawaii.
Among the subheads: "No Japanese Raid Since Last Night Up to 8 A.M." "President Says America to Fight On Until Victory" "Governor Issues Proclamation of Hawaii Emergency" and more.
Pages 1, 2 & 3 are in English, with page 4 in Japanese.
Four pages, some discrete archival mends at the margins, minimal wear, good condition.
Discovery: We obtained this newspaper several decades ago and held it for future release. However, until recently we believed the title to be THE NIPPON FIJI. Since it was printed in both English and Japanese, we (incorrectly) assumed the "odd" spelling was merely due to translation differences between the languages. The decorative font certainly did not help. Thanks to advanced searching tools via the internet (AI and otherwise), we now know this newspaper is not just the Hawaiian edition of the notable Nippon Fiji published in Japan, but an entirely unique publication from Hawaii. If you own a newspaper with an obscure or non-mainstream title, perhaps a similar "hunt" may prove as interesting.
