background: Operation Dragoon, launched on August 15, 1944, was the Allied invasion of southern France aimed at opening a second front and accelerating the liberation of France. The operation involved a combined force of American, Free French, and British troops, supported by extensive naval and air bombardments. The main objectives were the strategic ports of Toulon and Marseille, which were captured within weeks, allowing the Allies to secure vital supply lines. The invasion began with airborne drops behind German lines, followed by amphibious landings along the French Riviera, quickly overwhelming German defenses. The success of Operation Dragoon enabled Allied forces to advance rapidly northward, linking up with troops from Normandy by early September, and contributed significantly to the collapse of German positions in southern France, hastening the overall Allied push into Western Europe.
