background: On February 8, 1952, King George VI died unexpectedly in his sleep at Sandringham House, and his eldest daughter, Princess Elizabeth, who was 25 years old and visiting Kenya on a royal tour, immediately became Queen Elizabeth II. The news of her father’s death reached her while she was at Sagana Lodge, prompting her and Prince Philip to return swiftly to the United Kingdom. Her accession marked the start of a new era for the British monarchy, though her formal coronation would not occur until June 2, 1953, allowing a period of mourning and preparation. As queen, Elizabeth assumed the responsibilities of head of state over the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth realms, beginning a reign that would eventually become one of the longest in British history, characterized by both continuity and adaptation in a rapidly changing world.
