AI notes: Keith Smart was the hero of the 1987 NCAA Championship game, famously sinking the game-winning 15-foot jump shot with just four seconds left to give Indiana a 74-73 victory over Syracuse. After a quiet first half, Smart scored 17 points in the second half, stepping up under pressure from coach Bob Knight, who warned him he needed to contribute quickly to stay in the game. A Baton Rouge native, Smart transferred to Indiana after starring at a junior college, and his clutch performance earned him the Final Four Most Outstanding Player award. Although his NBA playing career was brief, he later made a name for himself as an NBA coach. In 2017, Smart was inducted into the Indiana University Athletics Hall of Fame, cementing his legacy in Hoosier basketball history.
