AI notes: On July 22, 1942, 29 German U-boat crewmen from U-85 were buried with full military honors at Hampton National Cemetery near Norfolk, Virginia. The U-85 was sunk by the USS Roper off Cape Hatteras on April 14, 1942, with all hands lost. Bodies later washed ashore and were recovered by U.S. authorities. Despite the ongoing war, the burial followed military tradition and the Geneva Convention, with U.S. Navy personnel serving as pallbearers. The graves remain at Hampton as a rare example of German WWII military dead interred in the U.S.
