AI notes: In July 1945, the U.S. Navy and Army Air Forces launched a devastating assault on the Japanese naval base at Kure, Hiroshima Prefecture, one of Japan’s last major fleet anchorages. Between July 24 and 28, waves of carrier-based aircraft from Admiral William F. Halsey’s Third Fleet and long-range B-29 bombers attacked warships, shipyards, and industrial facilities. Kure, once home to the mighty Yamato, now sheltered Japan’s crippled remaining capital ships, which were largely immobilized by fuel shortages. The raids sank or heavily damaged much of the Imperial Navy still afloat, including the battleships Haruna, Ise, and HyĆ«ga, as well as the aircraft carriers Amagi and Katsuragi, and several cruisers and destroyers. The city’s docks and arsenals were also pounded, leaving the harbor in ruins. The destruction of Kure marked the virtual end of Japan’s naval power, coming just weeks before the nation’s surrender in August 1945.
