Early Ben Franklin item ("Speech of Polly Baker")... Foldout map of Genoa...



Item # 717058 THE GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE, London, April, 1747  Inside includes the well-known Ben Franklin item: "Speech of Miss Polly Baker". This is the earliest Ben Franklin appearance in a Gentleman's Magazine and perhaps within any British publication, as confirmed by the Franklin Papers, Yale University. The full text of the "speech" can be found at Founders Online of the National Archives.
Nearly five pages are taken up with an: "Account of the Behaviour and Execution of the late Lord Lovat & some Further Particulars of his Life". Included are the details of his execution on Tower Hill. Lovat was involved in the Jacobite Rebellion.
Two pages are taken up with a: "List of Ships Taken on both Sides" including several which were bound to or from the North America & the West Indies.
A prime feature is the nice foldout map headed: "A South View Of The City of Genoa" Italy, which is very detailed. It measures 8 by 15 indices with minor margin wear.
An article includes an interesting illustration described as: "Method to Warm Rooms by the Steam of Boiling Water" is much like present-day hot water heating systems.
Nearly 3 pages are taken up with: "An Account of a Description of Iceland and Groenland" [Greenland].
Near the back is the "Historical Chronicle" which includes an article beginning: "Lord Loval was beheaded on Tower Hill. Just before he came from the Tower...".
Lacking the other plate called for.
Complete in 48 pages, 5 1/2 by 8 1/2 inches with wide margins, full title/contents page featuring an engraving of St. John's Gate great condition.

A very nice pre-Revolutionary War magazine from the "mother country" with a wide range of varied content. This was the first periodical to use the word "magazine" in its title, having begun in 1731 and lasting until 1907.
