background: On January 3, 1945, during the Battle of the Bulge, Allied forces launched a major counteroffensive to push back the German advance that had begun in mid-December. British and American troops under General Montgomery attacked from the north near Houffalize, while General Patton’s Third Army continued advancing from the south, aiming to close the German salient and relieve Bastogne. Improved weather allowed Allied air power to resume operations, further weakening German positions. This coordinated effort marked a turning point, as the German offensive began to collapse under mounting pressure and logistical strain.
