USS Iowa battleship launching... WWII...

Item # 716075

August 27, 1942

NEW YORK WORLD-TELEGRAM, Aug. 27, 1942

* USS Iowa battleship launching
* United States Navy - WWII

The front page has a large photo showing the USS Iowa being launched from it's dry dock with heading: "Iowa, Mightiest Battleship Is Launched in Brooklyn" with subhead. (see images) Nice to have in this NYC publication.
Much on other World War II events of the day. Complete with all 26 pages, light toning and minor wear at the margins, generally nice.

AI notes: The USS Iowa (BB-61), the lead ship of the Iowa-class battleships, was launched on August 27, 1942, at the New York Navy Yard and christened by Ilo Wallace, wife of Vice President Henry A. Wallace. Designed for speed and power, the Iowa displaced around 57,000 tons, stretched 887 feet in length, and could exceed 33 knots, making her one of the fastest battleships ever built. Armed with nine 16-inch guns and extensive anti-aircraft defenses, she was intended to escort fast carrier groups and engage enemy battleships. Commissioned on February 22, 1943, she served in World War II, the Korean War, and was later reactivated in the 1980s.
