Note: In 1943, journalist Eric Sevareid was rescued after a harrowing experience in the Himalayas during World War II. While covering a secret mission for the U.S. Army in Asia, Sevareid and others were forced to parachute from a malfunctioning aircraft over the remote and treacherous mountains of northern Burma. Despite injuries and harsh terrain, the group was guided to safety by native Kachin tribesmen and American-trained rescue teams. The mission, known as one of the earliest and most daring air rescues, highlighted the bravery of both local allies and the fledgling U.S. Air Rescue Service.
