Note: In May 1957, Major League Baseball approved the relocation of the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants to the West Coast, a landmark decision that transformed the league's national footprint. On May 28, National League owners voted to allow both teams to move—on the condition that they relocate together. The Dodgers would move to Los Angeles and the Giants to San Francisco, beginning play there in the 1958 season. The decision was driven by declining attendance and stadium issues in New York, particularly for the aging Ebbets Field and the Polo Grounds.
The move marked the first time MLB had teams based on the West Coast, signaling a new era of expansion and nationwide popularity. While the relocation devastated many fans in New York, especially in Brooklyn, it established baseball’s long-term presence in California and created a new regional rivalry between the Dodgers and Giants. The Yankees remained the sole MLB team in New York until the Mets joined the league in 1962, helping to eventually restore National League baseball to the city.
