Microsoft announces "WINDOWS" to the world...

Item # 715885

November 11, 1983

LOS ANGELES TIMES, November 11, 1983

* Microsoft announces "WINDOWS" to the world
* View multiple programs simultaneously
* Historic in the world of personal computers

The front page of the Business Section has the historic unveiling of Microsoft's new "WINDOWS" operating system: "Microsoft Joins 'Multiprogram' Product Field" which is continued on an inside page. Quite historic. In contrast to the "game changing" announcement, is the report of Atari signing on Alan Alda in an effort to encourage adults to take their own computers seriously.
Complete with all major sections (100+ pages), nice condition.

AI notes: Microsoft Windows was first announced on November 10, 1983, as a graphical user interface (GUI) extension for MS-DOS, aiming to make personal computing more intuitive with the use of windows, icons, and a mouse. After two years of development, this was the first version. It featured a tiled window layout (no overlapping), basic applications like Notepad, Calculator, and Paint, and allowed limited multitasking. Although it received mixed reviews due to performance limitations and lack of software support, it marked Microsoft's first step toward a GUI-based operating system. Windows 1.0 required a system with at least 256 KB of RAM, two floppy drives, and a graphics adapter, and while adoption was initially slow, it laid the foundation for the dominant Windows OS line that followed, including the commercially successful Windows 3.0 and Windows 95.
