background: The capture of Richmond, Virginia, on April 3, 1865, marked the dramatic collapse of the Confederate capital and signaled the imminent end of the American Civil War. After a prolonged siege that had lasted nearly a year, Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant finally broke the Confederate lines at Petersburg in early April, forcing General Robert E. Lee to evacuate both Petersburg and Richmond. As Confederate President Jefferson Davis and his cabinet fled south, the city was left vulnerable. Union troops, led by Grant and Major General Philip Sheridan, entered Richmond on April 3 to find it largely abandoned, though fires set by retreating Confederates were still raging, particularly in military depots and warehouses. Despite the chaos, Union soldiers quickly moved to extinguish the flames and restore order. The fall of Richmond, coupled with Lee's retreat westward, marked the Confederacy's collapse, and just days later, Lee would surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9, effectively ending the war. The capture of the city not only deprived the Confederacy of its capital and vital resources but also symbolized the final disintegration of the Confederate government and military power.
