AI notes: The Capture of Richmond in April 1865 marked one of the final and most symbolic events of the American Civil War. On April 2, 1865, following the collapse of Confederate defenses at Petersburg after months of siege by Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant, Confederate General Robert E. Lee informed President Jefferson Davis that Richmond, the Confederate capital, could no longer be held. Davis and the Confederate government fled the city that night. Fires—some deliberately set to destroy supplies—swept through parts of Richmond, leaving much of it in ruins. On April 3, 1865, Union troops, led by Major General Godfrey Weitzel, entered Richmond and raised the U.S. flag over the city. The fall of Richmond delivered a devastating blow to Confederate morale and effectively signaled the beginning of the end for the Confederacy. Just six days later, on April 9, 1865, Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Court House, bringing the war to a close.
