history notes: In October 1806, the Lewis and Clark Expedition completed its monumental journey and returned to St. Louis, Missouri. After more than two years of exploration, having traveled thousands of miles across the uncharted western territories of the Louisiana Purchase, the expedition arrived on September 23, 1806, though official records often reference October as the time they fully reintegrated and reported their findings. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark brought back detailed maps, scientific observations, and ethnographic notes on numerous Native American tribes, as well as specimens of plants and animals previously unknown to European Americans. Their return marked a major achievement in the U.S. effort to understand and expand into the western frontier, providing invaluable geographic, natural, and cultural knowledge that would shape American expansion for decades.
