Much on slavery - the day the Pony Express began...

Item # 720299

April 03, 1860

THE EVENING POST, New York, April 3, 1860  Although this is the day the Pony Express began its inaugural run, there is no mention of this historic moment. However, the issue does contain much related to slavery. The front page has: "The Horrors of the Slave Trade in Richmond", which is quite graphic. Page 3 has: "Arrival of the Sloop-of-War Vincennes with the Officers of the Slaver Orion", with subhead: "News from the African Squadron - Another Suspected Slaver", followed by considerable details. While these two focus on the African Slave Trade to America, a page 2 article has: "The Colie Trade", which briefly discusses the Chinese Slave Trade and the efforts to inhibit it.
Other news and advertising of the day is found throughout.
Four pages, very large size, a bit irregular at the spine margin, a small upper right corner piece missing from the 2nd leaf - fully contained within the margin, generally nice. The issue will be shipped folded at the mid-fold, and if a folder is ordered, it will be sized to ship folded at the mid-fold.
