The fall of Richmond in a Richmond newspaper: just the 2nd issue under Yankee control...

Item # 701666

April 04, 1865

EVENING WHIG, Richmond, Virginia, April 4, 1865

* The Fall of Richmond - Yankees occupation
* Very 1st issue published by the Union
* One of a kind ?

A terrific issue, being what we believe to be first issue published under Yankee control since the fall of the Confederate capital. Although not printed on the issue sources note this is vol. 1, no. 1 under Yankee control,
The front page has just a one column masthead & dateline with most of the issue taken up with various reports on the Yankees entering the city. The front page has a report noting in part: "The publication of the Whig is resumed this afternoon, with the consent of the military authorities. The editor, and all who heretofore controlled its columns, have taken their departure...The Whig will therefore be issued hereafter as a Union paper..." with much more.
Also on the front page: "The Occupation of the City" and: "The Rebellion 'Played Out' " and other articles.
The back page of this single sheet issue has: "The City" "The Evacuation of Richmond by the Confederate Army--Its Occupation by the Federal Forces--Great Fire--The Entire Business Portion of the City Destroyed--Lives Lost, Etc., Etc." with the text providing much detail.
Complete as a single sheet issue, very likely due to the shortages of paper and other necessities with the occupation of the city by federal forces. The margin is a bit irregular at spots, but no loss of type.
An incredibly significant issue from the closing days of the Civil War, from what was the capital of the Confederacy.
