Among the front page column heads on the Civil War are: "The War News" "The Enemy's Minds" "Promotions in the Army" which takes nearly half a column; "Later From the North" and more.
Also of interest is: "The Execution of Capt. Leopold--His Last Letter to His Mother" which is very heartfelt, and about whom there are several websites.
The back page is mostly taken up with ads & notices, but also has: "Yankee Heirlooms" and: "Yankee Finances".
Complete as a single sheet issue, some printing creases, nice condition.
AI notes: Captain Andrew T. Leopold, a 22-year-old Confederate officer from Shepherdstown, Virginia, was executed by Union forces at Fort McHenry in Baltimore on May 23, 1864. He had served in the 12th Virginia Cavalry and was part of Rosser’s Brigade in the Army of Northern Virginia. Although the specific charges against him remain unclear, his execution was significant enough to be reported in the Richmond Daily Dispatch, which also published a heartfelt farewell letter he wrote to his mother shortly before his death. This letter, penned in the blank pages of a book titled Glimpses of Heaven, highlighted his emotional state and devotion to his family. He is buried in Elmwood Cemetery in his hometown.
