THE DAILY PROGRESS, Raleigh, North Carolina, Feb. 23, 1865
* Rare Confederate title
* Civil War nears the end
* Sherman's victory march
Raleigh was one of the last major cities of the South to fall into the hands of Sherman, surrendering on April 13, 1865, just one day before Lincoln was assassinated. This rare Confederate title is from the latter weeks of the Civil War.
The notable content is the back page report: "Sherman's March Through Georgia" with much detail on his war efforts late in the war. Another report: "Sherman" reports on his location. The editorial is headed; "The Fall of Wilmington".
The front page includes: "The Exchange of Prisoners" "From Petersburg" "From Richmond" "Later From the North" and a "General Order" signed in type by: R. E. Lee, being a desperate attempt to garner more soldiers by offering amnesty to deserters. This is following by another General Order signed: R. E. Lee.
Complete as a single sheet, folio size newspaper in very nice, clean condition.
AI notes: In February 1865, Sherman’s army was advancing through South Carolina and into North Carolina as part of its devastating "March to the Carolinas". After capturing Savannah in December 1864, Sherman’s forces targeted South Carolina, the first state to secede, destroying vital Confederate resources, burning towns like Columbia, and dismantling railroads. His strategy of total war—damaging civilian infrastructure and seizing supplies—was aimed at crippling the South’s ability to continue fighting. By the end of February, Sherman’s army had entered North Carolina, closing in on the Confederacy's final resistance as the war neared its end.
