background: In 1862, after the U.S.-Dakota War in Minnesota, 38 Dakota men were hanged in Mankato on December 26—the largest mass execution in U.S. history. The war stemmed from broken treaties and hardship. Over 300 men were sentenced to death, but President Lincoln commuted most sentences, allowing 38 to be executed. The event remains a symbol of injustice and is remembered in efforts toward reconciliation.
