May 02, 1862

WESTERN SENTINEL, Winston, North Carolina, May 2, 1862  This is a very rare title from the Confederacy. According to Brigham only four institutions in the United States have any holdings of this title from the Civil War, most just a few scattered issues. The American Antiquarian Society has no issues recorded from this era.
The front page has: "The Next Few Weeks" which begins: "Great armies are confronting each other with but a few miles between, at Corinth in the West, and in the Peninsula of the York & James. Besides these, Jackson and Banks are near each other in the valley of Virginia..." with much more. Also: "Further from the Fight at South Mills" "The Yankee Breast Plate" "Exemption Under the Conscription Law of Congress" and a few other items.
Inside has: "The News" which begins: "The most important news received this week has been the capture of the city of New Orleans by the enemy. This is a severe blow to the South, but misfortune will occur and must be meet & borne in a courageous manner..." with more (see photos). Also inside: "Island Number Ten" "The Fall of New Orleans" which takes nearly a full column; "Northern News" "Partizan Rangers" "Gen. Prentiss Again" "Beauregard's Address to his Troops" which begins: "You have bravely fought the invaders of your soil two days in his own position; fought your superior in numbers, in arms, in all appliances of war. Your success has been signal, his losses have been immense, outnumbering yours in all save personal worth of slain..." with more. This is concerning the Battle of Shiloh, or Pittsburg Landing, and is signed in type: G.T. Beauregard.
Complete in four pages, a bit of light foxing, generally nice condition.
