background: The Battle of Greenbrier River, also known as the Battle of Camp Bartow, took place on October 3, 1861, in Pocahontas County, (then) western Virginia, during the early stages of the American Civil War. Union forces under Brig. Gen. Joseph J. Reynolds launched an attack on Confederate troops led by Col. Henry R. Jackson, who were entrenched at Camp Bartow near the Greenbrier River. Despite several hours of artillery and infantry fighting, the battle ended inconclusively, with Reynolds withdrawing his troops back to Cheat Mountain.
