August 23, 1913

EVENING TRIBUNE, San Diego, Aug. 23, 1913

* Jess Willard kills opponent
* Punch in the head (9th round)
* Boxer Jack "Bull" Young

The front page has a nice banner headline: "'BULL' YOUNG MEETS DEATH IN VERNON PRIZE RING" with subheads. (see) Surprisingly this issue is in good condition being from the "wood pulp" era. Very hard to find issues that are not totally fragile from this era in paper.
Complete with 20 pages, small library stamps within the masthead, a little irregular along the spine, generally very nice.

wikipedia notes: His (Willard) physical strength was so great that he was reputed to be able to kill a man with a single punch, which unfortunately proved to be a fact during his fight with Jack "Bull" Young in 1913, who was punched in the head and killed in the 9th round. Willard was charged with second-degree murder, but was successfully defended by lawyer Earl Rogers.
