January 22, 1864

THE LIBERATOR, Boston, Jan. 22, 1864

* Rare anti-slavery publication
* re. Robert Gould Shaw death
* American Civil War era

This is the famous anti-slavery newspaper by famed abolitionist publisher William Lloyd Garrison. The masthead features two engravings, one of a slave auction and the other showing slaves being emancipated.
The most notable content includes a copy of a note sent to the editor of the London Daily News regarding the late Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, leader of the 54th Massachusetts (the famous colored regiment depicted in "Glory") which says in part, "...Whatever verdict posterity may pass on Stonewall Jackson, Robert Gould Shaw will be a hero in all time."
This is followed by a plea to the south to consider erecting a monument in his name (similar to what the North did for Stonewall Jackson).  However, the tone of this request is quite negative as it includes the (alleged) response of the south to a request by the north to have his body returned (a common practice), in which the south was quoted as saying, "We have buried him with his niggers".
Additional content includes: "Third Decade of the American Anti-Slavery Society" "Speech of Lucy Stone" "To the Women of the Republic" "Third Decade Pamphlet" "Letter from John G. Whittier" "Enrollment of Colored Soldiers" and more.
Four pages, folio size, never bound nor trimmed with some minor wear at fold junctures and a few very discrete archival mends at margins. Generally nice condition. Folder size noted is for the issue folded in half.
