March 06, 1801
NEW ENGLAND PALLADIUM, Boston, March 6, 1801 The 1800 Presidential election was hotly contested, ending in a tie between Jefferson & Burr. After 36 ballots & a deadlock, the House chooses Jefferson.
Page 2 has: "The committee instructed on the 18th inst. to wait on the President elect and notify him of his election: Report--That they have, according to order, performed that service & addressed the President elect...". Following this is Jefferson's response in which he references the tie vote: "I receive, gentlemen, with profound thankfulness, this testimony of confidence...In deciding tween the candidates, whom their equal vote presented to your choice, I am sensible that age has been respected, rather than more active & useful qualifications..." with more, signed in type: Thomas Jefferson, Feb. 20, 1801.
Page 3 has a curious & brief item: "It is reported Congress are considering the expediency of removal from Washington till it is more adequate to their accommodation." The city was just newly built at that time,, and apparently not sufficiently so for Congress.
Four pages, nice condition.
