THE NEW YORK TIMES, September 2, 1928
* Roald Amundsen death confirmed
* Norwegian polar - arctic explorer
The front page has a two column headline: "AMUNDSEN PONTOON FOUND OFF NORTH NORWAY COAST; HOPE FOR CREW ABANDONED" with subheads that include: "Identification Is Definite" "Norwegians Believe That Nobile Relief Party Perished on Flight to Spitsbergen" and more. This discovery put any hopes of finding the famous arctic explorer alive to rest. 1st report coverage continues on page 2 with nice photo of Amundsen. Loads of text here, too much to photograph all.
Other news, sports and advertisements of the day. Complete in a 100+ page Sunday edition, this is the rare rag edition that was produced on very high quality newsprint, with a high percentage of cotton & linen content, allowing the issues to remain very white & sturdy into the present. Given the subscription cost, libraries & institutions rather than individuals were the primary subscribers of these high-quality editions. A little spine wear, otherwise in very nice condition.
