RICHMOND WHIG, Virginia, August 30, 1862
* Abraham Lincoln repoly
* Horace Greeley
One of the less common titles from the capital of the Confederacy.
On the front page under "News from the North" is the text of Abraham Lincoln's reply to an open letter addressed to him by New York Tribune editor Horace Greeley. The address, known as "The Prayer of Twenty Millions", urged Lincoln to emancipate all slaves in Union-held territory. The letter appeared in the August 20, 1862, issue of the Tribune. The letter is prefaced with an introductory paragraph headed: "An Exposition from Lincoln" noting it is a response to the Greeley's letter (see). Hereafter is the text of Mr. Lincoln's reply to Greeley, dated August 22, in which he states, in part: "...If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone, I would also do that..." & more (see), signed in type: A. Lincoln. Great to have this content not only in a Confederate newspaper, but one from the capital of the Confederacy.
The front page also has an editorial headed: "European Recognition", and much other war-related content including: "The Indian Atrocities in Minnesota" "Yankee Finances" "An Order From Gen. Burnside" signed by him: Maj. Gen. Burnside; "The Peninsular Campaign--Gen. Magruder's Official Report" which takes over two columns with considerable detail, and is signed by him in type: J. Bankhead Magruder (see).
The back page has more good content with: "A Brilliant Cavalry Exploit" "The Impressment of Slaves In Georgia" "Outrages in Arkansas" "From Kentucky" and more, plus there is various reporting from the: "Confederate Congress" and many ads, including a "$100 Reward" ad for a runaway negro, with much details (see).
A single sheet issue with a one column masthead, never bound, several folds with minor wear at the folds, generally good condition.
