Item # 710002
July 24, 1863
THE DAILY EXPRESS, Petersburg, Virginia, July 24, 1863 Petersburg was a critical city to the Confederacy, located not far south of the capital of Richmond, and the focus of a six-month long siege which ended in early April, 1865, when Lee withdrew his troops from Petersburg and urged Jefferson Davis to remove the capital from Richmond. The war would end shortly thereafter.
This is an uncommon Confederate newspaper from Petersburg, with much front page war content including: "Another Glorious Victory--Terrific Bombardment--Battery Wagner Fiercely Assaulted--One Thousand Yankees Killed & Wounded--Desperate And Bloody Fighting, Etc.", "Arrival of Two Steamers--The Surrender of Port Hudson--Particulars From the World's Own Correspondent--The Fall of Vicksburg & the Cause of the Capitulation--the Rebels Reduced to Their Last Ration--Affairs in new Orleans", "From Port Hudson & New Orleans" and "From Charleston".
There is more war coverage on the bkpg. including: "The Case of the Alexandria", "Speech of Vice President Stephens", "Another Raid", "Yankee Plunder", "From the Valley", "A Successful Raid", "Morgan Pretty Well Used Up--Yankee Account (Fabulous of Course.)" and more.
Complete as a single sheet newspaper, some rubbing at the folds with a tiny hole at the upper fold juncture, otherwise scattered foxing and in very nice condition.
