ST. LOUIS GLOBE-DEMOCRAT, Missouri, November 15, 1880 Page seven has the lengthy account taking more than a column: "Eloping With A Negro", with subheads: "Strange Infatuation of a Wealthy Farmer's Adopted Daughter" and "Running Away With Her Father's Black Hired Hand - They Fail to Get Clergyman to Marry Them Until Her Face and Hands had Been Blackened With Burnt Cork", with considerable details. The account clearly contrasts how mixed-racial marriages were viewed in the late-1800's as compared to those of today.
