background: The arrival of the SS Zion in New York Harbor in late March 1956 served as a powerful symbol of the young State of Israel’s growing maritime prestige and economic reach. As the 10,500-ton liner completed its 5,000-mile maiden voyage from Haifa, it was greeted by the traditional fanfare of New York fireboats and a heavy escort, eventually docking at a newly dedicated pier in Brooklyn. The vessel was not merely a passenger ship but a dual-purpose "cargo-passenger" liner, designed to transport over 300 travelers in air-conditioned comfort while hauling 5,000 tons of goods. By joining its sister ship, the SS Israel, the Zion helped solidify the first regular, direct Trans-Atlantic link between the United States and Israel, cutting the travel time to just under two weeks and providing a modern, "floating piece of Israel" for the diaspora and tourists alike during the golden age of ocean travel.
