background: William Jordan Bush, famously known as "General" Bush, was a remarkable figure of American longevity and a living link to the 19th century until his death at the age of 107 in 1952. Born in Wilkinson County, Georgia, he joined the Confederate forces as a teenager, serving with Company B of the 14th Georgia Infantry during the Atlanta Campaign. Although he ended the war as a private, he earned his honorary "General" title through his leadership in the United Confederate Veterans during the early 20th century. A resident of Fitzgerald, Georgia, Bush became a local icon known for his spirited personality—often performing a celebratory jig for crowds even past his 100th birthday—and he was officially recognized as the last surviving Confederate veteran from the state of Georgia.
