February 28, 1991

SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, Calif., February 28, 1991

* War in Iraq ends
* Desert Storm is over

The banner headline reads: "'THIS WAR IS BEHIND US'" with various subheads and two related photos. Nice for display. Much more on the inside pages. Loads of text.
Complete 1st section only with all 20 pages, minor margin wear, generally nice.

background: February 28, 1991, stands as the definitive conclusion of the Gulf War’s combat phase, occurring exactly 100 hours after the ground campaign began. Following the devastating "Highway of Death" retreat and the total liberation of Kuwait City, President George H.W. Bush declared a suspension of offensive operations, effectively halting coalition forces as they sat poised on the doorstep of a total collapse of the Iraqi military. While the ceasefire ended the immediate international conflict, it left a complex legacy: Saddam Hussein remained in power, and the retreat was marked by an environmental catastrophe as Iraqi forces ignited hundreds of Kuwaiti oil wells. In the immediate vacuum of the defeat, internal uprisings by Kurds and Shias began to brew, setting the stage for a decade of no-fly zones, sanctions, and regional instability that would eventually lead to the 2003 Iraq War.
