background: On September 9, 1940, London experienced one of the first and most severe raids of the Blitz, often referred to as “Black Saturday.” Beginning in the evening, over 300 German bombers struck the city, dropping a mix of high-explosive and incendiary bombs that ignited widespread fires across the City of London, the West End, and surrounding residential districts. The Luftwaffe targeted both industrial sites and civilian areas in an attempt to break morale and disrupt daily life, with famous landmarks like St. Paul’s Cathedral narrowly avoiding destruction. Casualties were heavy, with more than 400 killed and 1,600 injured, and tens of thousands of homes damaged or destroyed. The bombing continued for hours through the night, overwhelming emergency services and setting the tone for the sustained aerial campaign that would continue through May 1941, marking the beginning of Londoners’ long endurance under nightly air raids.
