background: Tomoyuki Yamashita was a highly skilled Japanese general known as the “Tiger of Malaya” for his swift and decisive conquest of Malaya and Singapore in 1941–1942, which demonstrated extraordinary strategic and tactical ability and shocked the Allied forces in Southeast Asia. Born in 1885, Yamashita rose through the Imperial Japanese Army ranks and was respected for his disciplined leadership and innovative use of mobility and surprise in warfare. After Japan’s defeat in 1945, he was arrested by Allied forces and tried by a U.S. military tribunal in the Philippines for war crimes committed by troops under his command, including atrocities against civilians and prisoners of war. Although Yamashita did not directly order many of these acts, the tribunal held him responsible under the principle of “command responsibility,” establishing a legal precedent for holding military leaders accountable for the actions of subordinates. Convicted of these crimes, he was executed by hanging on February 23, 1946, in Manila, making his trial a landmark case in international law and postwar justice.
