background: On February 15, 1980, at the Lake Placid Winter Olympics, Eric Heiden of the United States made history by winning the gold medal in the men’s 500-meter speed skating event, his first race of the Games. Heiden skated a blistering 38.03 seconds, setting a new Olympic record and establishing himself as a dominant force in the competition. This victory marked the beginning of an unprecedented sweep in Olympic speed skating, as Heiden went on to capture gold in all five men’s events—500 m, 1,000 m, 1,500 m, 5,000 m, and 10,000 m—becoming the first and only athlete to win five individual gold medals in a single Winter Games. His performance on February 15 showcased not only his incredible speed and technical precision but also his remarkable versatility, since the 500 m is a sprint event demanding explosive power, in contrast to the endurance required in the longer distances he would later dominate.
