May 29, 1952

THE NEW YORK TIMES, May 29, 1952

* Willie Mays "The Say Hey Kid"
* New York Giants baseball player
* Joins the United States Army (Korean War)

Page 22 has a editorial by New York Times sportswriter Arthur Daly: "Farewell to Willie" with smaller subheads and photo of Mays hanging up his jersey in the Giants locker room after his last game before joining the U.S. Army. I suspect this to be an extremely rare item because their was really no reason to save it at the time.
Complete with 46 pages, rag edition in very nice condition.

wikipedia notes: Soon after the 1951 season ended, Mays learned the United States Army had drafted him to serve in the Korean War. Before he left to join the Army, Mays played the first few weeks of the 1952 season with the Giants. He batted .236 with four home runs in 34 games. He surprised sportswriters like Red Smith when he drew cheers from fans of the Brooklyn Dodgers, the Giants' archrivals, in his last game before reporting.
