background: On October 24, 1930, Chicago mob boss Joseph “Joe” Aiello was spectacularly assassinated in the 5800 block of North Kolmar Avenue on the city’s Northwest Side, in one of the most brazen gangland killings of the Prohibition era. Aiello, a longtime rival of Al Capone for control of Chicago’s Unione Siciliana and the city’s Italian underworld, was walking along the street when gunmen opened fire from a nearby apartment building, unleashing a hail of bullets from machine guns, rifles, and shotguns. Aiello was struck dozens of times—reports at the time claimed as many as 50 to 60 bullets—and died almost instantly, his body riddled and mutilated in a public display meant to send a message. The assassination effectively ended Capone’s last serious challenge within the Italian mob hierarchy, consolidating his dominance over Chicago’s organized crime scene. Newspapers across the country treated the killing as emblematic of Prohibition violence, highlighting both the militarized tactics of gang warfare and the city’s inability to rein in mob power during the early years of the Great Depression.
