AI notes:
Metropolis, directed by Fritz Lang, made its American debut on March 6, 1927, at the Rialto Theatre in New York City, marking the first major U.S. exhibition of what is widely regarded as the earliest monumental science-fiction film. The Rialto, one of Broadway’s most prestigious movie palaces, presented the film with full orchestral accompaniment and elaborate staging, underscoring its status as a cinematic event rather than a routine release. By the time it reached American audiences, however, Metropolis had already been heavily cut and re-edited from its original German version following its January 10 Berlin premiere, with entire subplots simplified or removed to suit U.S. tastes and shorter running times. Even in truncated form, audiences were struck by its vast futuristic city sets, innovative special effects such as the Schüfftan process, and its bold themes of industrialization, class division, and the uneasy relationship between humans and machines. Though initial American reviews were mixed and box-office performance disappointed, the March 6 Rialto Theatre opening secured Metropolis a lasting place in film history as the foundational work of feature-length science fiction cinema.
