background: Charles Starkweather was executed by the state of Nebraska on June 25, 1959, for the murders he committed during his 1957–1958 killing spree. At just 20 years old, he was put to death in the electric chair at the Nebraska State Penitentiary in Lincoln, making him one of the youngest people executed in the U.S. during the 20th century. Starkweather had been convicted primarily for the murder of 11 people, including his girlfriend Caril Ann Fugate’s family and several others across Nebraska and Wyoming. His execution followed the denial of multiple appeals, and witnesses reported that he remained defiant to the end, refusing last rites and making no final statement. The case shocked the nation and later inspired numerous books, films, and songs, cementing Starkweather’s place as one of the most infamous American murderers of the postwar era.
