AI notes: On May 19, 1948, just five days after the proclamation of the State of Israel, Jerusalem was under siege in the opening stages of the 1948 Arab–Israeli War. Arab Legion forces, commanded by British officer Glubb Pasha, had surrounded the city and cut off the vital Tel Aviv–Jerusalem road, threatening to starve out the Jewish population. Inside Jerusalem, Jewish neighborhoods, particularly in the Old City, faced heavy bombardment and shortages of food, water, and medical supplies. On that same day, the first organized Jewish convoys began making desperate attempts to break through the blockade, leading to fierce battles along the corridor, especially near Latrun. The situation was dire: communications were severed, the Old City’s Jewish Quarter was close to collapse, and the Haganah (soon to be the Israel Defense Forces) was scrambling to reinforce and resupply the city before it fell completely into Arab hands.
