AI notes: In November 1934, the small Pennsylvania community near Carlisle was shocked by the discovery of three young girls’ bodies in the woods along what is now Pennsylvania Route 233, near Pine Grove Furnace State Park. The victims—Norma Sedgwick (12), Dewilla Noakes (10), and Cordelia Noakes (8)—were found wrapped in a blanket, having been suffocated or strangled, and remained unidentified for several days, prompting a nationwide search for information. Investigators eventually traced the girls to a family traveling from California, revealing that their deaths were linked to Elmo Noakes, the father of Dewilla and Cordelia and stepfather to Norma. Shortly after the murders, Noakes committed a murder–suicide, killing his 18-year-old niece, Winifred Pierce, and then taking his own life near Altoona, Pennsylvania, about 100 miles away. Motives are believed to have involved financial strain and fear for the family’s future, although the exact reasoning was never fully established. The case, occurring during the hardships of the Great Depression, drew national attention, and the girls were later buried in Westminster Cemetery in Carlisle, with a roadside marker now commemorating the tragic event.
