background: On February 21, 1945—two days after the initial landings—the battle for Iwo Jima intensified as U.S. Marines pushed inland against deeply entrenched Japanese defenses, confronting fierce machine-gun, mortar, and artillery fire from a maze of interconnected bunkers and tunnels. The Japanese, following General Kuribayashi’s strategy of attritional warfare, launched coordinated nighttime counterattacks and sniper operations aimed at slowing American advances and inflicting maximum casualties. Marine units fought bitterly to secure the Motoyama airfield approaches while grappling with rugged volcanic terrain that offered little cover. Despite heavy losses, the Marines methodically reduced Japanese strongpoints with flamethrowers, demolitions, and close-quarters combat, gradually edging forward in a brutal struggle that defined the grinding nature of the Iwo Jima campaign.
